Stephen King
The Folly Stringybark, 2018

NSW, Australia
hardwood
110 x 700 x 350cm

It was a fascination with building and recycling fallen trees on his sheep farm in New England NSW that led Stephen King to sculpture. The Folly Stringybark is made from hardwood which is heavier than typical European timber. The large size is rooted in his passion for building. "I am often thinking of geometric constructions. They need to have a certain scale to work, so that you can walk through, touch and climb on them". King’s immense work rises from the earth like a giant, staking a claim on the environment. While the landscape provides the foundation for the art, it is the absorption of the rural panorama and his imagination that feeds his inspiration.
