Composition 2 by Sasha Reid explores how something which was obviously part of a tree can be something else as well. Wood is a medium in which mistakes cannot be hidden. Everything that is done is visible. This leads to a simpler execution strategy - doing more with less. Fewer cuts to get the shape, as little material as possible to achieve the aesthetic. The simple ‘Y’ shape which is the main component of this sculpture is quintessentially a gumtree shape. Size, scale, space and composition are what help expand on what that standard shape might become.
