Born in 1958, David Ball grew up in the Australian bush - an upbringing that has informed his artistic practice, materials and career. Like the Australian bush, Ball's sculptures can come across as quite simple, raw and rugged at times. Unlike other artists, Ball constructs his sculptures by hand - including this work titled the 'Fissure'.

When constructing his large scale sculptures, Ball emphasises how they will look from different angles, noting "I believe sculpture should command and relate to a space and work completely in the round, offering differing experiences from all angles - structure and poetry in one". The placement of Ball's sculpture on Mona Farm reflects this philosophy; providing guests with a unique experience of the work from different perspectives.
